Veneto is a major northeastern Italian wine region extending from Alpine foothills and Lake Garda to broad plains near the Adriatic. It produces internationally important sparkling, white, red, and sweet wines through denominations including Prosecco, Soave, Valpolicella, Amarone, and Bardolino.
Overview
Veneto stretches from the Dolomites and Alpine foothills through rolling hills and river plains toward the Adriatic. Lake Garda moderates western vineyards, while eastern hills around Verona, Vicenza, and Treviso contain several of the region's most recognized denominations.
Glera supports Prosecco across a broad protected area, with Conegliano Valdobbiadene and Asolo providing more specific hilly origins. Garganega anchors Soave, while Corvina and related grapes underpin Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella, Recioto, and Bardolino. These names describe different origins or production categories and should not be collapsed into grape-level relationships.
The regional climate ranges from cool mountain and foothill conditions to warmer plains, with influences from Lake Garda, the Adriatic, elevation, and local air movement. Volcanic formations, limestone, moraine, clay, gravel, and alluvial soils appear in different districts.
Veneto's graph should expose the hierarchy among regional denominations, more specific zones, historic production areas, grapes, methods, and wines. Sparkling technique, grape drying, and residual sweetness are production attributes linked to—but not interchangeable with—geographic origin.
