Santenay AOC
Santenay AOC is a designated wine appellation located within the Burgundy region of France. Santenay AOC produces mainly structured red Pinot Noir and smaller amounts of white Chardonnay at the southern end of the Côte d’Or.
Overview
Vineyards extend across several hills and combes south of Chassagne-Montrachet. Limestone-marl slopes with iron-rich clay yield firm, earthy reds with cherry and spice, while Chardonnay from suitable sites combines freshness with rounded texture.
History
Santenay’s history includes both winegrowing and mineral springs; its communal AOC was recognized in 1937.
Geography
The appellation occupies varied east- and southeast-facing slopes around Santenay near the departmental boundary.
Climate
Continental conditions, southern position, elevation, and airflow through combes create a range of ripening environments.
Soils
Limestone and marl mix with clay, iron-rich oolite, gravel, and slope deposits.
Wine styles
Red Pinot Noir dominates and is often firm and savory; white Chardonnay is less common but fresh and substantial.
Notable features
Santenay marks the southern end of the Côte d’Or escarpment before the vineyards continue into Maranges.
