Pommard AOC is a designated wine appellation located within the Burgundy region of France. Pommard AOC produces exclusively red Pinot Noir renowned for depth, firm structure, and aging capacity.
Overview
A broad vineyard amphitheater south of Beaune channels water and slope deposits toward Pommard. Iron-rich clay-limestone soils and varied exposures yield deeply colored Pinot Noir with dark fruit, earth, spice, and substantial tannin that softens with age.
History
Pommard’s wines have carried a powerful red-wine reputation for centuries; the village AOC was formally recognized in 1936.
Geography
Vineyards occupy east- and southeast-facing slopes on both sides of the Avant-Dheune valley between Beaune and Volnay.
Climate
Continental conditions, warm exposures, and airflow through the valley support ripe fruit while hail and runoff can be significant risks.
Soils
Jurassic limestone and marl combine with clay, iron-rich material, scree, and alluvial fans, creating notable variation across the slope.
