Musigny AOC
Musigny AOC is a designated wine appellation located within the Burgundy region of France. Musigny Grand Cru crowns Chambolle-Musigny with celebrated red Pinot Noir and Burgundy’s rare Grand Cru white Chardonnay.
Overview
Above Clos de Vougeot, Musigny climbs a steep limestone terrace from about 260 to nearly 300 meters. Shallow, clay-enriched soils produce perfumed, finely powerful Pinot Noir; a minute quantity of Chardonnay may make exceptionally rare white Musigny.
History
The Musigny family held ducal offices in the fourteenth century; vineyard boundaries were formally fixed in 1929 before the AOC system.
Geography
The appellation occupies a steep east-facing terrace between Les Amoureuses and Échezeaux, rising toward the Combe d’Orveau.
Climate
Continental conditions are moderated by elevation and airflow, with morning sun supporting gradual ripening.
Soils
Shallow rocky Jurassic limestone soils contain notable red clay and are generally more clay-rich than neighboring grands crus.
Wine styles
Red Pinot Noir defines the appellation; an exceptionally scarce white Chardonnay is also authorized.
Notable features
Musigny is the only Côte de Nuits Grand Cru appellation permitted to produce both red and white wine.
