Monthélie AOC
Monthélie AOC is a designated wine appellation located within the Burgundy region of France. Monthélie AOC produces mainly red Pinot Noir and limited white Chardonnay in a sheltered valley between Volnay and Meursault.
Overview
Vineyards curve around the village at the head of a combe, continuing the geology of Volnay while turning onto varied exposures. Limestone-marl soils yield fragrant, fresh reds with red fruit and supple tannin, plus scarce, rounded whites.
History
Monthélie’s long village winegrowing tradition was formally protected by AOC recognition in 1937.
Geography
The appellation occupies slopes around a recessed valley between Volnay, Auxey-Duresses, and Meursault.
Climate
Continental conditions are moderated by valley airflow and diverse aspects, producing cooler and warmer pockets within a compact area.
Soils
Jurassic limestone and marl form stony brown soils with variable clay, scree, and iron-rich material.
Wine styles
Red Pinot Noir dominates; a smaller amount of white Chardonnay is fresh, floral, and rounded.
Notable features
Its curved, multi-exposure hillside links the red-wine character of Volnay with the mixed vineyards farther west.
