Marsannay AOC
Marsannay AOC is a designated wine appellation located within the Burgundy region of France. Marsannay AOC forms the northern gateway to the Côte de Nuits and uniquely produces village-level red, white, and rosé wines.
Overview
Vineyards around Chenôve, Marsannay-la-Côte, and Couchey climb slopes south of Dijon. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay express limestone-and-marl sites through fresh reds, precise whites, and dry rosés, giving Marsannay an unusually broad stylistic identity.
History
Marsannay’s vineyards have long supplied Dijon; village AOC recognition in 1987 united the three communes and protected all three wine colors.
Geography
The appellation runs along slopes and combes around Chenôve, Marsannay-la-Côte, and Couchey at the northern end of the Côte.
Climate
Continental conditions and cool air from the combes preserve freshness, while favorable east and southeast exposures aid ripening.
Soils
Jurassic limestone and marl mingle with gravel, scree, and alluvial deposits from the combes.
Wine styles
Pinot Noir produces red and rosé wines, while Chardonnay produces dry whites.
Notable features
Marsannay is Burgundy’s only village appellation authorized for red, white, and rosé wine.
