Grands Échezeaux AOC is a designated wine appellation located within the Burgundy region of France. Grands Échezeaux Grand Cru is a compact, homogeneous red Pinot Noir vineyard between Musigny and Clos de Vougeot.
Overview
The appellation extends the north-south line of Musigny on a gentle east-facing slope near the upper Clos de Vougeot. Consistent clay-limestone soils over Bajocian limestone produce dense, balanced Pinot Noir with dark fruit, spice, fine tannin, and long aging potential.
History
Its name shares the same ancient origin as Échezeaux and came to denote this distinct lower sector before Grand Cru protection in 1937.
Geography
The vineyard forms a regular east-facing block around 250 meters between Musigny, Échezeaux, and the upper Clos de Vougeot.
Climate
A continental climate and gentle morning-facing slope promote steady ripening with good drainage and retained freshness.
Soils
Relatively homogeneous clay-limestone soil overlies Bajocian limestone across the modest gradient.
Wine styles
Only red Pinot Noir is produced, typically dense, composed, structured, and long-lived.
Notable features
Its geological consistency contrasts sharply with the larger and more varied Échezeaux appellation.
