Clos de la Roche AOC
Clos de la Roche AOC is a designated wine appellation located within the Burgundy region of France. Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is Morey-Saint-Denis’s largest Grand Cru, producing firm, deep, red Pinot Noir from shallow limestone soils.
Overview
At the northern end of Morey-Saint-Denis’s grand-cru band, Clos de la Roche faces east to southeast around 250 meters. Hard limestone lies close to the surface, supporting concentrated Pinot Noir with dark fruit, savory earth, mineral firmness, and substantial longevity.
History
The vineyard name refers to prominent underlying rock rather than a fully enclosed clos; it received Grand Cru protection in 1936.
Geography
The appellation occupies the east-facing mid-slope immediately south of Gevrey-Chambertin and north of Clos Saint-Denis.
Climate
A continental climate, favorable sunrise exposure, and mid-slope airflow balance ripeness with freshness.
Soils
Hard limestone dominates beneath brown calcareous soil often only about thirty centimeters deep, with large stones and limited clay.
Wine styles
Red Pinot Noir exclusively, typically serious, structured, earthy, and long-lived.
Notable features
Despite its name, it is not wholly walled; its shallow bedrock and position make it the firmest of Morey-Saint-Denis’s grands crus.
