Chapelle-Chambertin AOC
Chapelle-Chambertin AOC is a designated wine appellation located within the Burgundy region of France. Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru is a red-only Pinot Noir appellation on the lower eastern side of Gevrey-Chambertin’s grand-cru slope.
Overview
Chapelle-Chambertin lies below Clos de Bèze, where the slope eases and soils gain depth. Its warm east-facing position and limestone-clay matrix yield Pinot Noir that is often generous, aromatic, and supple while retaining the structure expected of Gevrey’s grands crus.
History
The appellation takes its name from a historic chapel associated with the vineyard landscape and received Grand Cru protection in 1937.
Geography
The vineyard occupies a gently sloping east-facing sector below Chambertin-Clos de Bèze, close to the Route des Grands Crus.
Climate
A continental climate and open eastern exposure encourage early morning warming, with frost, hail, and summer rainfall shaping vintages.
Soils
Deeper brown calcareous soils combine limestone debris, marl, and clay over Jurassic substrata.
Wine styles
The appellation produces red Pinot Noir exclusively, often showing ripe fruit, spice, breadth, and comparatively accessible texture.
Notable features
Its two component climats form a compact lower-slope counterpoint to the firmer sites directly above.
