Chambertin AOC
Chambertin AOC is a designated wine appellation located within the Burgundy region of France. Chambertin Grand Cru is a red-only Pinot Noir appellation on Gevrey-Chambertin’s east-facing mid-slope, known for depth, authority, and longevity.
Overview
Chambertin occupies a continuous mid-slope band south of Chambertin-Clos de Bèze at roughly 240 to 280 meters. Morning exposure, firm Jurassic limestone, and clay-limestone lower soils support concentrated Pinot Noir that combines dark fruit, savory complexity, powerful structure, and long aging capacity.
History
The Chambertin name has been used since the thirteenth century and gained enduring prestige through historic ownership and association with Napoleon; Grand Cru status was protected in 1937.
Geography
The vineyard lies on the east-facing Côte above Gevrey-Chambertin, between the upper slope and the Route des Grands Crus.
Climate
A continental climate brings cold winters, warm summers, and vintage variation; easterly exposure captures morning sun while retaining freshness.
Soils
Hard Bathonian limestone underlies the upper section, with brown scree-derived soils and deeper Bajocian marl and clay-limestone lower down.
Wine styles
The appellation produces red wine exclusively from Pinot Noir, typically profound, structured, complex, and exceptionally ageworthy.
