Vouvray AOC
Vouvray AOC is a Chenin Blanc appellation on the Loire's right bank east of Tours. Tuffeau limestone, clay and flint soils, river-influenced slopes, and variable vintages support dry, off-dry, sweet, and sparkling white wines with high acidity and notable aging capacity.
Overview
Vouvray AOC extends across eight communes on the Loire's right bank, running east from Tours through a landscape of plateaus, valleys, slopes, and limestone cliffs. Vineyards occupy sites above the Loire and smaller tributary valleys, while cellars and buildings have long been excavated into the region's soft tuffeau limestone.
Chenin Blanc, locally called Pineau de la Loire, is the appellation's sole grape. Its high acidity and responsiveness to vintage conditions allow still wines from dry through demi-sec and sweet, as well as sparkling wines. Autumn weather determines whether growers emphasize dry ripeness, noble rot, passerillage, or fruit for effervescence.
Tuffeau limestone underlies many sites, covered by varying combinations of clay, flint, limestone fragments, and deeper plateau soils. Slope, aspect, soil depth, and river influence affect drainage and ripening, while cool underground caves provide stable conditions for maturation and sparkling-wine production.
The graph should connect Vouvray AOC to communes, vineyards, styles, sweetness levels, producers, vintages, and wines. Dryness and effervescence are product attributes within the shared appellation, not separate geographic areas, so they must remain distinct from origin. This is especially important because a producer may make several expressions from related parcels in one year, or shift style with vintage conditions. Recording sweetness, sparkling method, vintage, vineyard source, and producer independently shows Vouvray's flexibility without suggesting that a dry and a sweet wine necessarily come from different appellations.
Geography & Climate
The appellation occupies plateaus and slopes on the Loire's right bank east of Tours. Tributary valleys cut through the plateau landscape, creating ridges, sheltered exposures, cliff faces, and extensive underground caves.
Soils
Tuffeau, a soft chalky limestone, forms the bedrock and many cellar walls. Vineyard topsoils include clay-limestone, flint-rich clay, limestone fragments, and deeper silty plateau deposits with differing drainage and heat retention.
Wine Styles
Vouvray ranges from taut dry Chenin Blanc through balanced demi-sec and rich sweet wines to lively traditional-method sparkling styles. High acidity supports freshness and long aging, with mature wines developing honeyed, waxy, nutty, and mineral complexity.
