Overview
Red Mountain AVA lies near Benton City in south-central Washington and is nested within Yakima Valley, which is itself within Columbia Valley. Despite its name, the area is a broad anticline rather than a mountain. Its open southwest-facing slopes rise gradually above the Yakima River and receive abundant summer sunlight.
The appellation is among Washington's warmest and driest, with persistent wind and very low annual rainfall. Irrigation is essential. The nearby river contributes airflow and some temperature moderation, while substantial nighttime cooling helps retain acidity after hot days. Wind can reduce berry size and influence vine growth.
Cabernet Sauvignon dominates plantings, supported by Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, and other red varieties. Wines are generally associated with concentrated fruit, firm tannin, and aging structure. Many wineries outside the AVA purchase grapes from its vineyards.
Red Mountain's small boundary makes it a useful specific node beneath the much larger Yakima and Columbia valleys. Sandy loam and gravel dominate, with alkaline conditions and substantial calcium carbonate in places. The low-fertility, well-drained soils and persistent wind can limit vine vigor and berry size, contributing to high skin-to-juice ratios.
Wine Styles
The appellation is known for concentrated, tannic, ageworthy Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux-style blends, along with structured Merlot and Syrah. Warmth encourages full ripeness, while wind and cool nights help retain shape and acidity.
