Overview
Muscadet Sèvre et Maine AOC lies southeast of Nantes on slopes above the Loire, the Goulaine marsh, and the Sèvre and Maine rivers and their tributaries. It forms the heart of the wider Muscadet vineyard and spans a rolling agricultural landscape of river valleys, ridges, and gently exposed slopes.
Melon de Bourgogne is the appellation's sole principal grape. The Atlantic-influenced climate is mild and relatively wet, with cool growing conditions, spring frost, rain, and variable harvest weather. Vineyard exposure and drainage are important for achieving ripeness while retaining the acidity central to the wines.
Ancient metamorphic and igneous formations create a complex foundation that includes gneiss, schist, granite, gabbro, and related weathered soils. Recognized communal geographic denominations identify sectors with distinct geology and stricter production and aging rules.
