Overview

A complex amphitheater of hills, valleys, and exposures around Mercurey and Saint-Martin-sous-Montaigu produces substantial reds and smaller amounts of Chardonnay.

Vineyards occupy varied slopes around two communes northwest of Chalon-sur-Saône.

Jurassic limestone, marl, clay, and iron-rich soils vary across faults and slopes.

Red Pinot Noir dominates; white Chardonnay is less common but fresh and rounded.
