Friuli Isonzo DOC covers the gravelly plain and low hills along the Isonzo River south of Collio. Warmer and flatter than the border hills, it produces clean, fruit-driven whites and reds from both international and native varieties on well-drained alluvial and gravel soils at moderate cost.
Overview
Friuli Isonzo DOC occupies the lower Isonzo River plain between the Collio hills to the north and the Adriatic coast. The terrain is largely flat to gently undulating, composed of river-deposited gravel, sand, and clay. Vineyards benefit from the warming effect of the Adriatic and from well-drained alluvial soils that are distinct from the flysch hillsides above.
The denomination produces a wide range of varietal wines. Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Friulano are the principal whites, while Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Refosco appear in reds. The style tends toward approachable, fruit-forward wines, often released younger than Collio or Colli Orientali equivalents.
Isonzo is an important volume denomination within Friuli Venezia Giulia, bridging the premium reputation of the border hills and the larger-scale production of Friuli Grave. Some quality-focused producers in the zone demonstrate that the gravel terroir can support more concentrated wines, particularly from older vine material.
