Friuli Colli Orientali DOC covers the eastern hills of Friuli from Tarcento south to Cividale del Friuli and beyond. Its flysch-based slopes, warm valley positions, and diverse native and international grapes produce concentrated whites, structured reds, and acclaimed sweet wines including Picolit and Ramandolo, which hold separate DOCG status.
Overview
Friuli Colli Orientali DOC extends along a north-south band of hills east of Udine, running from Tarcento in the north through Cividale del Friuli and southward. The denomination borders Collio to the southeast and shares the same flysch geology, but its greater north-south extent creates wider variation in altitude, exposure, and microclimate.
White grapes include Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, and Malvasia Istriana. Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso and Schioppettino are the most distinctive red varieties, alongside Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Pignolo. The native reds carry a tannic, berry-driven character specific to the zone.
Picolit, a rare native grape prone to floral abortion, produces small quantities of prized sweet wine. The Ramandolo subzone, recognized separately as DOCG, produces sweet wines from Verduzzo Friulano. Both demonstrate the denomination's range beyond dry whites and reds.

Flysch soils of alternating marl and sandstone dominate the hillsides, consistent with the geology of neighboring Collio. Alluvial gravel and clay appear in lower positions. Soil depth, drainage, and marl content vary along the north-south extent of the zone.

Concentrated dry whites from Friulano and Ribolla Gialla, structured reds from Refosco and Schioppettino, and sweet wines from Picolit and Verduzzo define the range. The denomination supports a broader variety list than most Italian DOCs.
