Collio DOC
Collio DOC is a prestigious white-wine denomination in the hills west of Gorizia along the Slovenian border. Its flysch soils, sheltered slopes, and temperate continental-maritime climate produce concentrated, textured whites from Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, and Malvasia Istriana, alongside structured reds and influential orange wines.
Overview
Collio DOC occupies a compact band of hills between the Isonzo River valley and the Slovenian border, centered on the area west and northwest of Gorizia. The terrain is defined by a succession of rounded ridges running roughly east-west, separated by small valleys. Vineyards face varied directions and occupy elevations from roughly one hundred to three hundred meters.
The denomination is closely associated with concentrated, aromatic white wines. Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Malvasia Istriana, and Chardonnay are the principal white grapes. Merlot and Cabernet Franc lead among reds. The emphasis on white quality has given Collio a reputation as one of Italy's finest white-wine origins.
Extended skin-contact winemaking was revived in Collio by a small group of producers from the 1990s onward, drawing on older local traditions. These amber-colored whites, often labelled as orange wines, have become internationally significant, and Collio producers remain central to the movement.

Geography & Climate
The Collio hills form a band of rounded ridges northwest of Gorizia, extending to the Slovenian border. Vineyards occupy slopes at moderate elevations with varied aspects. The hills are geologically continuous with the Slovenian Brda on the eastern side of the border.
Soils
Flysch, a layered formation of alternating marl and sandstone known locally as ponca, is the signature soil type. It weathers into deep, mineral, water-retaining profiles that are widely credited with contributing to the richness and longevity of Collio whites.
Wine Styles
Concentrated, textured white wines are the denomination's signature, ranging from crisp single-variety Friulano and Sauvignon to complex blends and extended skin-contact expressions. Red wines from Merlot and Cabernet Franc offer an additional dimension.
