Amarante is a Vinho Verde subregion centered on the town of Amarante along the Tâmega River, inland from Porto. It occupies a transitional position between the Atlantic-coastal character of the western subregions and the warmer, drier interior, growing Loureiro, Arinto, Azal, and Avesso in a more sheltered river-valley setting.

Overview

Amarante occupies the Tâmega River valley and surrounding hillsides in the municipality of Amarante, southeast of Braga and northeast of Porto. The Tâmega flows south to join the Douro, and Amarante sits in the middle course of the river where the valley opens before climbing into the interior highlands.

The subregion's geography places it between the fully Atlantic-influenced coastal belt and the warmer interior represented by Baião and Basto. Loureiro and Arinto are the dominant white varieties, often blended for fresh, aromatic whites. Azal adds high acidity, and Avesso, more commonly associated with Baião to the south, also appears in warmer sites.

The town of Amarante itself is a regional cultural landmark, known for its bridge, monastery, and historic character. Viticulture is woven into the agricultural landscape of the Tâmega valley and the lower slopes of the surrounding granite uplands.

Geography & Climate

The subregion follows the Tâmega River valley around and upstream of Amarante. Vineyards occupy the hillsides and terraces flanking the river, at moderate elevations on granite terrain. The valley provides some shelter from both Atlantic winds and extreme inland heat.

Soils

Granite soils derived from the local upland massif predominate, with shallow, stony, and well-drained profiles typical of the Minho interior. Some alluvial influence is present near the Tâmega valley floor.

Wine Styles

Fresh white blends of Loureiro, Arinto, and Azal are the primary style. Avesso appears in warmer sites. Red wines from Vinhão and Espadeiro are also produced in the traditional Minho red style.
