Overview
Alexander Valley occupies a long corridor in northeastern Sonoma County, extending along the Russian River from north of Healdsburg toward the Mendocino County line. A broad valley floor rises into eastern benches and surrounding uplands, creating differences in drainage, exposure, and vine vigor.
The growing season is warm and dry, but marine air moves inland through the Russian River system and produces substantial cooling. Warm afternoons ripen Cabernet Sauvignon reliably, while cooler nights help retain acidity. Fog and airflow vary from the southern valley to warmer northern and elevated sites.
Cabernet Sauvignon is the appellation's defining wine, commonly producing ripe, structured expressions with generous fruit. Merlot, Zinfandel, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc broaden its profile. The valley floor, gravelly benches, and mountain-edge vineyards do not behave identically, so links to vineyards, grapes, producers, and neighboring Sonoma AVAs provide the useful detail behind the shared Alexander Valley name.
Geography & Climate
The AVA follows the Russian River and its watershed in northeastern Sonoma County. It includes river flats, alluvial fans, eastern benchlands, rolling hills, and higher slopes framed by the Mayacamas Mountains and adjoining uplands.
Soils
Deep alluvial soils occur near the river and valley floor. Benchlands commonly contain gravelly, sandy loams deposited from the surrounding mountains, while upland vineyards occupy shallower, rockier, well-drained soils with varied volcanic and sedimentary origins.
Wine Styles
Alexander Valley is best known for ripe, structured Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux-style red blends. It also produces supple Merlot, generous Zinfandel, and full-flavored Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
